Firefighters Local 522 issues endorsement in Elk Grove mayoral, District 1 races
Elk Grove News, August 18, 2020
Today the Sacramento Area Firefighters Local 522 issued an endorsement in four local races, including two for the Elk Grove City Council.
Their endorsement includes support for Elk Grove mayoral candidate Bobbie Singh-Allen, who is challenging incumbent Steve Ly and Elk Grove District 1 City Council Member Darren Suen who is being challenged by Ali Moua. The union also offered endorsements in the Galt City Council and Los Rios Community College District Service Area 4 Trustee contests.
In endorsing Singh-Allen, who currently serves as a Trustee for the Elk Grove Unified School District, the firefighters cited her eight-year tenure on the school board, where they say she committed to improving youth opportunities.
The endorsement letter said in part "As a long term trustee of one of the largest school districts in the state, Bobbie has shown she has the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform at a very high level and continues to pursue a vision of public service to the City of Elk Grove, which has been her home for almost 30 years."
Suen, who has been on the city council since his appointment to the District 1 seat in 2015, was cited for his educational background and his 20 years of Elk Grove residency. The firefighters said, "Throughout the years, Darren has used his extensive background in Civil Engineering and public service to grow this community in an intelligent and planned manner."
Additionally, the union endorsed Kevin Papineau for Galt City Council and Kelly Wilkerson for the Los Rios Community College District Service Area 4 Trustee. The union said it would not issue an endorsement in the four candidate District 3 Elk Grove City Council race.
Local 522 includes firefighters from the Cosumnes Fire Department, which serves Elk Grove and Galt. It was not disclosed if the endorsed candidates will receive financial contributions from the union.
